Damien Sausset How do your works come about? How do you choose the subject?
Pavlos There are thousands of ways of answering that question, but I’d like to start by a remark that is falsely naïve. There are two types of art. The first is based on the concept of Art for Art’s Sake. This, for instance, is what we find with Malevich and some other 20th century artists. Then there is the idea of Art for Man. All my education, all my life, and all my experience have led me towards this second idea. The context of Art for Art’s sake is totally foreign to me. Nature was my teacher. It is Nature which guided me, showing me the meaning of life. My art is therefore made for Man. So, to come back to your question: I would say that all my works speak to me without having any particular meaning. I also have a certain mistrust for people, even if I respect them. The worst and best are always linked. From this point of view I have always been keen to involve a human presence – through things which surround us, like clothing, ties or everyday objects.
